Customs needs US$ 55mn scanner upgrade to end container delays: industry insider
Sri Lanka Customs needs at least eight to ten container scanners, at least double the four now in operation, and an estimated US$ 55 million investment in a technology-led inspection facility to end the chronic clearance delays that inflate import costs, a senior logistics industry insider with direct knowledge of port operations said.

Primary surplus and debt-to-GDP: Underspending is not an appropriate solution
Though Sri Lanka’s higher-than-expected primary surplus helped push down its debt-to-GDP ratio past the IMF’s forecasted targets, part of the surplus maintained comes from underspending monies budgeted and allocated towards capital spending, Committee on Public Finance Chairperson and Parliamentarian Dr Harsha de Silva said, speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (6).

Sri Lanka’s farm policy carries ‘anti-export bias’
Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector is being held back by a policy framework that rewards protection more than exports, the World Bank said, calling for a shift from shielding production towards attracting investment and competing for higher-value global markets. In a strong assessment of the country’s agribusiness potential, the Bank said Sri Lanka had demonstrated that it could succeed internationally in tea, coconut, cinnamon, seafood and rubber-based manufacturing, but described these successes as “islands of excellence” rather than the norm.
